Launched in 2013, the The Dhahan Prize for Punjabi Literature has garnered international recognition among literary creators and critics in the Punjabi community. This year, submissions arrived from India, Pakistan, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia.
To be eligible, books must be published in the year prior to submission. Jury selections must represent at least one Ghurmukhi, and one Shahmukhi script (the two writing systems used among Punjabi speakers in India and Pakistan, respectively).
Jurors are first tasked with producing a shortlist of six to 10 entrants, announced by fall, before a winner and two finalists are selected. The selection process began on March 31, 2022, when submissions closed for this year.
Prior ceremonies have included artistic performances by musicians and dancers, as well as keynote speeches.
The Prize was created as a collaboration between the Canada India Education Society (CIES) and the University of British Columbia (UBC), Department of Asian Studies.
Its presenting sponsor is Royal Bank of Canada Foundation. Corporate sponsors include G.L. Smith Planning and Design, among others.
Barj Dhahan, B.C. businessman and co-founder of CIES, along with his family and friends, are primary supporters of the Prize.
